Did you know that according to research public speaking is the #1 fear people have? It is thought to affect up to 3 in 4 people. More people fear public speaking than death itself!!
So imagine the fear a wedding speech would generate, where you have to speak on front of friends, close family and relatives. Many people are thrilled when they find out they have been chosen as best man for a wedding, but shudder when they realise they will have to deliver a ten minute speech on front of an audience of 100 plus.
Well don’t fear, Toastmasters was invented just for this reason. In fact, when new members are introducing themselves to Dublin South Toastmasters, one of the common reasons for joining is that they have a big speech coming up for either a wedding or job etc.
By joining Toastmasters you can tackle the fear of public speaking at your own pace. Each meeting has a number of easier “roles” such as Timekeeper, Poetmaster, Grammarian where members can gradually practice their public speaking in a fun and supportive environment.
Members, when they are comfortable, can then progress on their Toastmasters journey to delivering speeches and even evaluating the speeches of other people.
And by the time you have to deliver that all important wedding speech you will be well prepared to impress on the day!
